Picala is a Spanish-inspired, live fire restaurant rooted in the tradition of gathering and sharing food. Chef Luis Sierra's menu draws on the culinary soul of Spain: cured meats, conservas, seasonal vegetables, and thoughtfully sourced proteins, executed with California's exceptional local ingredients and produce.
Guests can expect Spanish classics like jamon iberico, tortilla, patatas bravas, and paella, alongside Chef Sierra's inventive seasonal dishes inspired by the live fire and California's larder. The menu is designed for sharing, and changes with the seasons to reflect what is best and freshest.
Chef Luis Sierra is a chef whose culinary story is anything but ordinary. Before entering professional kitchens, he studied archaeology with a focus on ancient hearths, an experience that sparked a lifelong fascination with the way fire and food shape communities.
After training at the French Culinary Institute in New York, he honed his craft at Michelin-recognized restaurants including Estela, Altro Paradiso, La Vara, and Saint Julivert. Most recently, he served as Chef de Cuisine at Lulu in the Hammer Museum, founded by Alice Waters and David Tanis. His deep respect for Spanish culinary tradition, earned through years of living and learning in Spain, forms the heart of Picala's menu.
A few things set Picala apart. First, the cooking is anchored by a live wood fire, not just as a technique, but as the organizing principle of the kitchen and the spirit of the space. The smoke, the char, and the heat of the hearth shape every plate.
Second, the menu reflects a genuinely personal connection to Spain. Chef Luis Sierra spent years living and cooking in the country, and our hospitality director Lehena brings deep Basque roots to the program. The result is a menu informed by real experience rather than interpretation from a distance.
Finally, Picala is built around the idea of convivencia, the Spanish art of gathering and being together over food and drink. We are not a tapas bar, not a fine-dining showcase, but something in between: a place that takes the food and wine seriously while keeping the experience warm, generous, and unhurried.
Yes. Our menu features a generous selection of vegetable-forward dishes, and our ingredient-driven approach means seasonal produce plays a starring role year-round. Please let your server know about any dietary preferences when you arrive, and we'll be happy to guide you through the menu and accommodate where possible.
We take dietary restrictions and allergies seriously. Please inform your server of any allergies at the time of ordering, and we will do our best to accommodate you. For severe allergies, we recommend contacting us in advance so our kitchen team can best prepare. Please note that our kitchen is not allergen-free, so we cannot guarantee zero cross-contact.
Our bar celebrates the Spanish tradition of aperitivo: vermouth, sherry, natural wines, and thoughtfully crafted cocktails that complement the live-fired kitchen. The bar is an ideal spot for quick tapas and a drink before dinner or a leisurely evening on its own. Our hospitality director Lehena brings Basque roots and a Certified Sommelier's palate to every pour.
Yes. Picala has a patio well-suited for a relaxed evening with friends. The Cumulus District also features the Zocalo, a beautiful one-acre landscaped public park at the heart of the development, making the entire area feel open and connected to the outdoors. Patio seating is available weather permitting.
Yes. Picala is a wonderful setting for private dinners, corporate events, milestone celebrations, and industry gatherings. Our space can accommodate partial buyouts as well as full venue buyouts. To inquire, please email us at info@picala.com with your event date, estimated guest count, and any details about what you have in mind.
We are happy to accommodate celebration cakes brought from outside bakeries. A $5 per person cake-cutting fee applies. Please give us a heads up when making your reservation so we can coordinate with the kitchen.
Yes, Picala gift cards are available for purchase. They make a perfect gift for anyone who loves great food and convivial company. Please ask your server or purchase your gift card here on our website.
Yes. Picala sits at the heart of one of Los Angeles' most active entertainment industry corridors. Sony Pictures Studios is less than a mile away in Culver City. Amazon Studios, Apple TV+, and HBO/Warner Bros. Discovery all have significant presences within minutes of our door. MGM's historic Culver City lot is nearby as well.
We are a natural destination for creative industry meetings over dinner, and after-work gatherings for the many writers, producers, and crew members who work in the neighborhood. Our private dining options and flexible bar seating make us well-suited for everything from a two-person pitch dinner to a larger wrap party.
Picala is an ideal setting for business dining. The atmosphere is lively enough to feel special, yet the acoustics and room design allow for genuine conversation. The food is interesting and shareable without being distracting, and the wine and cocktail program gives any host plenty of thoughtful options to offer guests.
For industry professionals entertaining clients, we offer attentive, knowledgeable service and can accommodate specific seating preferences, dietary needs, and pace of service. Reach us at info@picala.com if you'd like to plan ahead.
We are always open to conversations about production use of our space. Given our location in one of LA's most active production neighborhoods and the visual warmth of our wood-fired dining room, Picala is well-suited as a location backdrop. Please reach out to us at info@picala.com to discuss availability and logistics.
Picala is rooted in West Adams, one of Los Angeles' oldest and most historically significant neighborhoods, and one that has emerged in recent years as a destination for food, art, and culture. The area around La Cienega and Jefferson has become one of the city's most dynamic urban intersections, with the Cumulus District's Zocalo park at its center.
Culver City's gallery corridor along Washington Blvd. is minutes away, as is Leimert Park and the Crenshaw cultural corridor. It is a creative, diverse, and genuinely welcoming part of Los Angeles.
Quite a lot. Before dinner, the Cumulus District itself offers Whole Foods for any last-minute provisions, plus a growing selection of shops and wellness options. The Zocalo is a lovely spot to arrive early and enjoy a drink outside.
For a fuller evening, Culver City's gallery district on Washington Blvd. is walkable and makes for a great pre-dinner cultural stop, especially on the first Friday of the month when many galleries host openings. The Platform, a curated shopping and dining complex, is minutes away. And for those arriving or departing by Metro, the E Line connects easily to Santa Monica, Culver City's downtown, and all of Downtown Los Angeles.
Yes. The Cumulus District was built to modern accessibility standards, and Picala is fully accessible for guests with mobility needs. The parking structure, entrance, dining room, bar, and patio are all accessible. If you have specific accessibility needs, please don't hesitate to contact us in advance and we will ensure your visit is comfortable.
Absolutely. Picala was designed as a true gathering place, and families are warmly welcome. The communal, sharing-style nature of Spanish dining is a wonderful experience for guests of all ages. We can accommodate high chairs, so please request one when reserving.
Yes. Well-behaved, leashed dogs are welcome on our patio. We are a dog friendly restaurant and love seeing four-legged guests join the gathering. Water bowls are available on request.
Per California law, dogs are welcome on restaurant patios but are not permitted inside the dining room or bar. If you are planning to bring your pup, patio seating is the way to go. On a nice LA evening, it is a pretty great spot to be.
Picala was made for evenings like that. The warm light, the fire, the unhurried pace of a shared Spanish meal. It all creates a setting that naturally invites conversation and connection. Whether it's a first date or a long-overdue night out, the combination of tapas at the bar, a well-chosen bottle of wine, and a live-fired feast makes for a genuinely memorable evening.
For a more intimate experience, request a corner table or bar-adjacent seating when you reserve. Early reservations on weeknights tend to offer the most relaxed atmosphere.
Very much so. Birthdays, anniversaries, promotions, and milestones all feel at home at Picala. The food and drink are special enough to mark the occasion, and our team genuinely enjoys making those moments feel cared for.
Let us know about the occasion when you book and we'll do what we can to make it feel right. For larger celebrations or groups, reach out at info@picala.com so we can plan ahead together.
Picala is a Spanish colloquial term used regionally in Andalusia that describes a literal and symbolic crossroads where paths meet, stories cross, and people gather in community connection. As Acme Hospitality founder Sherry Villanueva puts it, that is exactly the spirit of the restaurant: a West L.A. crossroads of people, cultures, and stories.
It's a name that speaks to both place and purpose. The Cumulus District sits at the junction of West Adams and Culver City, and Picala was designed to be the gathering heart of that intersection: somewhere dinner, drinks, and good conversation come together naturally.
Picala was designed by Studio UNLTD, a Los Angeles-based, award-winning hospitality design studio founded in 2009. Known for creating environments that feel both functional and unforgettable, Studio UNLTD is behind some of LA's most celebrated restaurant spaces, including Bestia, Bavel, Otium, and The Rose, as well as the revitalized Helms Bakery.
For Picala, the design blends handcrafted warmth with clean architectural lines. Natural pigments, woven textures, and sun-faded colors recall the artistry of a textile loom, while live-edge oak tables, tile insets, and curved banquettes create an atmosphere that is tactile, elegant, and welcoming. The restaurant seats 135 guests indoors, with an additional 45 on the outdoor patio.
The Cumulus District is a vibrant mixed-use development at 3321 S. La Cienega Blvd., situated at the crossroads of Culver City and the West Adams neighborhood. Anchored by Whole Foods Market and featuring over 50,000 square feet of retail, dining, fitness, and wellness tenants, plus more than 1,200 residences, it's one of LA's most exciting new urban destinations. At its heart is the Zocalo, a beautiful one-acre public park and gathering space.
Picala has no formal dress code. Come as you are. We aim to be welcoming and relaxed while offering a genuinely special dining experience. Smart casual is always a safe bet, but whether you're coming straight from the office or a Sunday afternoon at the farmers market, you'll feel right at home.
Picala is an energetic, convivial space. Lively but not overwhelmingly loud. Think warm light, the crackle of the wood-fired grill, good music at a conversational volume, and the buzz of a full dining room. It's the kind of place where you come to connect, linger, and enjoy the night. Guests looking for a quieter experience may prefer patio seating or an early reservation.
Picala is part of the Acme Hospitality family, a Santa Barbara-based hospitality group known for creating thoughtful, community-rooted restaurants and boutique hotels across California. Acme's portfolio includes beloved properties in Santa Barbara and the Gold Rush foothills, and Picala marks the group's exciting entry into the Los Angeles market.
